BON KOO

Bon Koo is a South Korean Contemporary artist whose layered animal imagery and expressive style probe memory, emotion, and the human experience.

Bon majored in painting at Hongik University, Seoul, and moved to New York more than 20 years ago to study the somewhat unfamiliar Theology and work on compassion for humans and instinct for survival through the object of animals as a medium of painting.

“In my Functional Contact series, I explore the emotional and symbolic potential hidden within ordinary, mass-produced objects. By rendering everyday items such as a baby bottle and a light bulb in a hyperrealistic manner, I aim not merely to imitate their physical surfaces but to investigate their deeper essence and the human instincts embedded within their functions."

Although these two objects differ greatly in purpose and cultural associations, they share an essential mechanism: each requires insertion into a corresponding opening in order to fulfill its role. This simple physical action recalls a primal human instinct, evoking the intimacy of connection and the generative force implied by the act of joining.
